Cross Border 4x4 Safaris: Liuwa Plains Wildebeest Migration

The Liuwa Plains are known for one of the great antelope migrations in Africa. Is the route of their incredible journey hard-wired into their genes? Does it drift to them on the wind? Or is it the fruit of bitter, generational experience, as the horizon dissolves into dust at the approach of thousands of Blue Wildebeest across the Liuwa Plains?

These are the questions that clamor for clarity, they may never be answered. Sometimes the creatures travel in bunches, at other times in long lines, which seem to stretch endlessly across the plains.
25,000 Wildebeest gather towards the beginning of the rainy season on the endless plains to have their young. The trek is not always coordinated, there's coming and going and some creatures seem to mill about in dusty confusion.

Itinerary

Day 1

Leave early morning from Pretoria. Enter Botswana at the Maartinsdrift   border post and stay over at Nata Lodge.

Day 2

André van Vuuren, director of Explore Africa, and qualified safari guide will meet you in Kasane (or alternatively on the evening of day 1 at Nata Lodge).
We will spend the night in the campsite at Chobe Safari Lodge. (beautiful campsite & ablutions, hot water showers, swimming pool and a character pub overlooking the Chobe River).
Chalet and  tented accommodation will also be available for your own account. Contact   09267 6250 336).

Day 3

We are going to spend a day in the Chobe. The Chobe is proud and very famous for it's abundance of elephants - the highest concentration to be found anywhere in Africa. Chobe is also famous for it's huge herds of   buffalo, for it's rich bird life and, not least for it's boat cruises and exquisite  sunsets - an African experience not to be missed. We spend the night again at Chobe Safari Lodge.

Day 4

From Kasane we enter into Namibia at the Ngoma border post and we will refuel and stock up in Katima Mulilo. From here travel via Wenela border post to Kabula Tiger Lodge. (Total distance 208km). The last 30km could be tough going depending on the condition of the road. Kabula Tiger Lodge was developed by Explore Africa and is situated in their concession area.
A sunset cruise on the Zambezi is a magnificent experience along with the sounds of the wild, which only Africa can provide.

Day 5

We have a long day of driving, thick sand and lots of bush. This is real 4X4 stuff. We will enter the Barotse Flood Plains just before dark and pitch a bush camp next to the road where we will spend the night camping wild.

Day 6
Day 7

We drive up to Kalabo (Distance ± 270 km from Kabula Tiger Lodge) Where we will cross the Lualinga river by hand driven pontoon and head into The Liuwa Plains, one of Africa's Last hidden secrets where we will spend the next three nights in our own bush camp, pitched in one of the beautiful tree islands.
This is seriously un-commercialized Africa and a once in a lifetime experience for most of us.
Minimum driving.
Explore The Liuwa Plains and be part of the Migration.

Day 8

We travel via Mongo to Senanga where we will spend the night (Flushing toilets and hot water showers available). It will be a tough day's drive but you will experience the true Africa (We will do two ferry crossings over the mighty Zambezi).

Day 9

Early morning we leave for Kabula Tiger Lodge where we will be pampered. Tiger fishing is the main activity at Kabula and you will arrive early enough to try your hand at it.

Day 10
Day 11

Leave early morning via the new bridge crossing the Zambezi at Sesheke for Livingstone for a visit to the Victoria Falls. The Victoria Falls is approximately 1690m wide and varies in height from 62m (Devils Cataract) to 109m (Eastern Cataract). In comparison the Niagra Falls are 968m wide and 54m high. Various activities e.g. Bungi Jumping, White River Rafting, Jet Boating, Flight of the Angels etc. are available at the Falls.
We will spend two nights camping at the Zambezi Waterfront in Livingstone.

Day 12

Leave for Nata Lodge on our way back to South Africa and overnight in the campsite. For those of us who do not want to camp, the option is available to stay in one of the chalets.
