Cross Border 4x4 Safaris: Central Kalahari Safari

This vast sea of sand has, for centuries, captured man's imagination. Although the Kalahari is largely uninhabited, it is not a true desert for it is home to a large number of plant and animal species that have managed to adapt to its inhospitable conditions.

  • Nata Lodge
  • Nxai Pan National Park
  • Kubu Island
  • The Central Kalahari Nature Reserve

Itinerary

Day 1

We leave via the Martins drift Border post between Botswana and South Africa for Nata Lodge where we will spend the first night. It's quite a long drive from Gauteng (800km) but the roads are in good condition and it is worthwhile since "the real Botswana starts here".

Day 2
Day 3

We break down camp and leave for the Nxai Pan National Park where we will spend the next two nights The Nxai Pan National Park consists mainly of a series of fossil pans, all of which are covered with short, nutritious grasses. On the pans are "islands" of acacia trees which form shady spots in which the animals often rest during the day. This makes for beautiful scenery and is unique to the Nxai Pans. Together with the famous group of baobabs south of the pan, Nxai Pan National Park is a must for every visitor to Botswana. Baines Baobabs were named after the famous explorer, Thomas Baines who painted the baobabs on the 22nd of May 1862. Interesting to note that in the 140 years that have since passed, there is little evidence of any change in the seven giants. (In case of the Pans being to wet, we will travel via Makgadikgadi National Park).

Day 4

Today we cross the pans to Kubu Island where we will spend the night in the community campsite. Kubu (meaning hippopotamus in Setswana) is the most famous of all the rock islands in the Makgadikgadi. Most of the rock islands in this area are remnants of ancient sand dunes. Kubu island is different in that it is one of the scatterings of granite islands. Kubu Island rises no more than 20 meters above the pan and is a national monument. Its eerily silent fossil beaches, stunted red baobab trees and mysterious stone walls leave an impression on every visitor. Most of the rocks on Kubu Island are stained white by fossilized bird droppings, bearing testament to the long-forgotten bird population that once lived on the island.

Day 5
Day 6
Day 7

We depart for the Central Kalahari Game Reserve where we will spend the next three nights. This is the best time of year to roam the plains around Sunday Pan and Deception Valley and anyone who has read "Cry of the Kalahari" by Mark and Delia Owen will know exactly why. wildlife in the area is plentiful, ranging from gemsbok, eland, kudu and springbok to cheetah, leopard and the evasive brown hyena and the inquisitive mongoose.
Bird life here is amongst the most prolific in the world and this region alone has over 900 species. Deception Valley is a bird lover's paradise, hosting a vast variety from the smallest of finches to the larges of vultures.

Day 8

We leave for Khama Rhino Sanctuary close to Serowe where we will camp for the last night in Botswana, under beautiful Manketi trees. For those guests who would prefer not to camp, the option is available to stay in one of the chalets, for more information or to book a chalet email krst@botsnet.bw.

Day 9

This is the end of our Kalahari Safari experience, we leave via the Martinsdrift border post back to South Africa.
