Cross Border 4x4 Safaris: Angola Expedition – Angola 2009 For those that do not have enough time on hand to join us on the Cunene to Congo River expedition we have catered for your needs. You have the opportunity of experiencing Angola with Koos and Isobelle on an 11 day expedition and to be part of an adventure and enjoy the natural beauty of Angola. We begin the tour in Ruacana—drive 1500 kilometers through three of the provinces, namely Cunene, Namib and Huila ending back in Ruacana. Tour Dates
Day 0 Meet at EHA Lodge – Ruacana – beautiful well equipped camping sites with clean ablutions, restaurant, bar, swimming pool – enjoy the evening around the campfire discussing the exciting expedition that is ahead. Day 1 After enjoying a hearty breakfast – final briefing on border crossing procedures – do radio checks and drive the 17kms to the Namibian/Angola Border Post. Here we will stop in no mans land and view the Ruacana Falls – then we cross into Angola. After border procedure ± 2 hours we cross the Cunene River and towards the town of Chitado through the Angolan bush. We pass Chitado and setup camp in the bush and enjoy the first night in Angola. Day 2 We proceed in a westerly direction through stunning bush scenes on to mountain area through the town Oncocua, then head further south west into Himba country where the Himba tribes in their traditional dress will be seen. We bush camp that night in the Moimba area. Day 3

Day 09 We follow the compass in a south westerly direction past Otchinjao to a bush camp near Chitado and spend the last night under Angolan skies. Day 10 We break up camp and depart for the Angolan border and cross the border to spend a night at EHA Lodge after an expedition that will be remembered for a lifetime. We pass through ever changing terrain towards Iona and then through an area similar to the Marienfluss in Namibia – past Espaneira, here herds of Springbok and Oryx can be spotted. The area from Iona has an abundance of Welwitchia. We then go through the Namib Desert for the last 75 km to the Cunene Mouth. We camp next to the Cunene River. Some may even try their hand at fishing from the beach, as there is an abundance of untapped sea life along the coast of Angola.
Early morning we deflate tyres and as the tide starts to turn from full tide to low tide we depart from the Cunene river mouth along the beach with the large desert dunes on the right and the sea on the left on an adrenalin rush adventure through the first of two killing zones each of which are 30km long. After negotiating the first killing zone we stop for the rest of the day in a dune camp and relax for the day at the sea.
We continue north along the beach and pass two shipwrecks, before we bypass the fishing town of Tombua in the desert. Our next stop is a stunning oasis in the desert, a fresh water lake called Lake Arco. We now head further north to Flamingo Lodge where we will spend three nights and two days enjoying the ocean:
Leave Flamingo and move north again to the harbour city of Namibe (previously known as Mocamedes) this is the home of Caminho de Ferro Mocamedes (CFM) the southernmost Angolan railway line. This railway extends to the east as far as Menongue ± 800km. After refueling and stocking up supplies we follow the compass east to Lubango, up the spectacular Leba Pass with its awesome hairpin bends and waterfalls. We stop at a lookout point for photographs. We proceed to the home of the Dorsland Trekkers at Humpata—visit their church and cemetery—on to Lubango and view the magnificent sights of the city of Lubango from the Statue of Christ which is situated on top of the mountain—we then proceed through Lubango to a bush camp at Tunda Valla—a breathtaking view from huge cliffs hundreds of feet below, watching an Angolan sunset on the horizon. The night is spent around a campfire on top of the mountain.
